Wondering when is the best time to ski in the High Tatras? The answer depends on what you expect from your winter holiday – the Christmas atmosphere of a mountain resort, empty slopes with perfectly groomed snow, or sunny spring skiing. The season in the Tatras usually runs from December to March, and in good conditions you can ski well into April. Each period has its pros and cons. In this article, as a ski school with more than 20 years of experience based directly in Tatranská Lomnica and Starý Smokovec, we will tell you when to come for the best snow, when to expect busy slopes and when to book your instructor well in advance.
The Ski Season in the High Tatras: December to April
The winter season in the High Tatras typically starts in December and peaks between January and March. Our school and rental shop operate in two resorts: in Tatranská Lomnica, where skiers of every level will find suitable slopes, and in Starý Smokovec at Jakubkova lúka next to Hotel Atrium, where a gentle, safe slope is ideal for children and beginners. You will find details about both places, including how to reach us, on our Locations page. Buy your ski passes online via gopass.travel or directly at the resort – in peak season this saves you time at the ticket office.
December: Season Opening and Christmas Atmosphere
December is the month when the Tatras wake up to winter. The beginning of the month tends to be calm – the resorts gradually open their slopes and there is plenty of space on the snow. If you want to learn to ski or brush up your technique without the pressure of crowds, the first weeks of December are an excellent choice.
The situation changes completely around Christmas and New Year's Eve. The holiday week is one of the busiest periods of the entire winter: the resorts are full, accommodation is more expensive and free instructor slots disappear very quickly. Christmas skiing has an unmistakable charm, but you should expect crowds on the slopes and at the lifts. If you are planning lessons during the holidays, book your instructor several weeks in advance – at peak times our team is fully booked.
January: The Best Snow and the Fewest Crowds
If we had to pick a single month, January would be our clear winner. After the holidays the slopes empty out noticeably, and snow conditions tend to be the most stable of the whole season – cold weather keeps the surface in great shape from morning until evening. Fewer people means shorter lift queues, more room for your turns and a calmer environment for learning. That is why we recommend January to beginners standing on skis for the first time as well as to parents with children. January days can be cold, so dress in layers and take breaks for a hot tea. The only thing to watch out for are weekends and foreign school holiday dates, when visitor numbers briefly rise.
February: School Holidays, Busy Slopes and Advance Booking
February is traditionally the busiest month of the season. Spring school holidays take place in Slovakia and in the neighbouring countries one after another, so the slopes are full especially at weekends and during the holiday weeks. On the other hand, the days get longer, there are more sunny spells and the skiing is still excellent.
In February it applies twice over: plan ahead. A private lesson is a huge advantage in this period – the instructor focuses exclusively on you or your family, finds a quieter spot on the slope and adapts the lesson to your pace even when the resort is full. Ideally, book your slot as soon as your accommodation is confirmed, by phone on +421 911 561 561.
March and April: Sunny Spring Skiing
March is the underrated gem of the Tatra winter. After the school holidays the slopes empty out again, the days are long and sunny and skiing takes on a relaxed, spring-like atmosphere. The snow tends to be firmer in the morning and softens in the afternoon, so we recommend skiing mainly before noon. In good conditions, the higher sections stay skiable well into April.
Spring is also the favourite time for ski touring. If you are tempted by ski touring in the High Tatras, you can rent a complete Ski Trab touring set from our rental shop in Tatranská Lomnica from €40 per day – advance reservation is required for touring equipment.
When Is the Best Time to Ski in the High Tatras with Kids?
For families with children we recommend January and March – fewer people on the slope means a safer and calmer environment for the first turns. We teach children from the age of 3 and provide a free helmet with every lesson. The youngest skiers do best at Jakubkova lúka in Starý Smokovec, where the gentle, safe slope is made for first steps on skis. You will find practical tips on preparing your child for their first lesson in our article on ski courses for kids.
Book Your Lessons and Gear in Advance
Whichever month you choose, one thing always holds true: in peak season it pays to book ahead. At Premiere we offer private ski and snowboard lessons only – no group classes, just you and an APUL-certified instructor. Our team consists of more than 30 instructors who speak English, Slovak, Czech and Polish, and we hold a 4.8★ Google rating from 216 reviews.
Lesson prices start at €44 for 60 minutes, the most popular option is the 90-minute lesson for €63, and each additional person pays only +€17. Multi-day courses come with a discount of 5% (3 days) or 10% (6 or more days) – you will find the full overview in our price list. There is no need to bring your own gear: our rental shop in Tatranská Lomnica is an official Rossignol Test Centre and a complete set costs from €24 per day.
