Planning your first ski trip this winter and wondering how to sort out ski equipment for beginners – rent or buy? It is one of the questions we have heard most often from our clients over more than 20 years, and for most people the answer is surprisingly simple. In this article we cover what you actually need on the slope, how ski boots and a helmet should fit, and why renting is almost always the smarter choice at the start – with real prices from our ski rental in Tatranská Lomnica.
Ski Equipment for Beginners: Rent or Buy?
If you are just starting out, our recommendation is clear: rent. And it is not only about the money.
- You don't know what suits you yet. Ski length, boot stiffness and ski type are chosen based on your build, technique and progress. As a beginner you cannot know these yet – and gear bought "blind" tends to be the most expensive mistake.
- You improve quickly. You spend your first days on a gentle slope; a season later, completely different skis may suit you. At a rental you simply swap the model to match your current level.
- Kids outgrow their gear. Children need new boots and skis practically every season. Renting solves this for a fraction of the price.
- No servicing, no carrying. Waxing, edge sharpening, summer storage and transport by car or train – all of it disappears. You pick up your gear right by the slope.
Now the numbers. At our rental in Tatranská Lomnica, the complete SKI BASIC set – Rossignol REACT skis, boots and poles – costs €24 for one day, €46 for two days and €67 for three days. New downhill equipment of comparable quality typically runs into hundreds of euros, plus servicing and replacement after a few seasons. While you are still trying skiing out, renting is the obvious choice both financially and practically.
What a Beginner Actually Needs on the Slope
The basic kit for downhill skiing is not a long list, but every item matters:
- Skis with bindings – beginners do best on shorter, softer skis that turn easily and forgive mistakes.
- Ski boots – the most important part of the whole setup. They transfer every movement to the ski, so they must fit precisely.
- Poles – help with balance and the rhythm of your turns.
- Helmet – a matter of course today for children and adults alike.
- Ski goggles – protect your eyes from wind, snow and the sharp mountain sun.
- Clothing – a waterproof jacket and trousers, a functional base layer, gloves and one pair of thin ski socks.
Everything except clothing can be rented from us in one place. Our rental is also an official Rossignol Test Centre, so you ride current, regularly serviced models – we wrote more about the offer in our article on ski rental in the High Tatras.
How Ski Boots Should Fit
A badly fitting boot can ruin a whole day on the slope, so give it the most attention. How do you recognise the right fit?
- Snug, but pain-free. The boot should wrap your foot from all sides. Pressure that turns into pain after a few minutes means the wrong size or shape.
- Toes lightly touch the front. Standing upright, your toes may touch the tip of the boot. When you bend your knees into a skiing stance, the toes pull slightly back.
- The heel stays put. When you flex your knees, your heel must not lift. If it lifts, the boot is too big.
- One thin sock. Two thick socks will not keep your feet warmer – on the contrary, they compress the foot and reduce circulation.
- The most common mistake? A boot that is too big. A "comfortable" boot one size up becomes uncontrollable on the slope.
At our rental we fit and adjust the boots for you on the spot – and if a model does not feel right, you simply exchange it. That is exactly what you do not get when buying online.
Helmet and Goggles: Never Save on Safety
A helmet should sit firmly: it must not move when you shake your head, there should be about one finger of space between the strap and your chin, and no gap should form on your forehead between the helmet and the goggles. At our rental a helmet costs €6 per day and goggles €5 per day – and if you book a private lesson, the helmet is free.
For children a helmet is non-negotiable. We teach kids from the age of 3, and their safety always comes first – read more about our ski lessons for children.

You can learn more in our article on ski touring in the High Tatras.
Notice that the price per day drops with the number of days – three days with the SKI BASIC set works out at roughly €22 a day. We are open daily from 8:00 to 21:00 throughout the season, which runs roughly from December to March or April.
When Buying Your Own Gear Makes Sense
To be fair – buying has its place. It pays off once you ski regularly for several weeks a season, your technique has settled and you know exactly what type of ski suits you. Even then, the proven order applies: buy your own ski boots first, because they are the most personal part of the equipment. You can happily keep renting skis – at our Rossignol Test Centre you can even test current models before investing in a pair.
Gear Sorted – What About Technique?
Even the best equipment will not teach you to ski. Your first turns come fastest with an instructor: our private lessons start at €44 for 60 minutes, the most popular 90-minute lesson costs €63, and you will find the full overview in our price list. Our certified instructors (APUL) speak English, Slovak, Czech and Polish and teach at two locations – in Tatranská Lomnica and on the gentle Jakubkova lúka meadow in Starý Smokovec, which is ideal for complete beginners. You will find details of both spots on our locations page and practical tips for your first days on the slope in the article How to learn to ski.
