Family Ski Holiday in the High Tatras: Stress-Free Skiing with Kids

Published:

A family ski holiday in the High Tatras without chaos or tears

A family ski holiday in the High Tatras is the kind of experience children talk about for years. At the same time, skiing with kids follows completely different rules than a winter getaway for two: a different daily rhythm, more breaks, more gear to carry, and one crucial question – who will teach the little ones to stand on skis in a way they actually enjoy? In this article you will find a proven day plan with kids, a family-focused comparison of Tatranská Lomnica and Starý Smokovec, and an explanation of why a shared private lesson is often the smartest choice for families.

Why the High Tatras are ideal for skiing with kids

The High Tatras offer families a combination that is hard to find elsewhere: a gentle, safe practice slope for complete beginners in Starý Smokovec and a full-scale resort in Tatranská Lomnica for those who can already link their turns. On top of that, moving between the two locations takes just a few minutes, so you can flexibly adapt the programme as your children's confidence on skis grows.

At Premiere ski school we teach children from the age of 3 and exclusively through private lessons – no group classes with ten unfamiliar kids where your child gets only a few minutes of attention. The instructor focuses solely on your family, adjusts the pace to the youngest member, and every child gets a helmet free of charge with the lesson. Our team consists of more than 30 certified instructors (APUL) with over 20 years of experience, speaking Slovak, Czech, Polish and English – so international families communicate without any trouble. Our 4.8★ rating from 216 Google reviews speaks for itself.

Tatranská Lomnica or Starý Smokovec: which is better for a family?

This is the question we hear from parents most often. The short answer: it depends on your children's level and on whether the adults want to get some proper runs in too.

  • Starý Smokovec – Jakubkova lúka (next to Hotel Atrium) is the ideal choice for children and beginners. A gentle, safe and easy-to-overview slope means you always have your kids in sight, there is no rush, and the first turns happen without the stress of faster skiers whizzing by. You will find a detailed look at this slope in our article Starý Smokovec – Jakubkova lúka.
  • Tatranská Lomnica is a bigger resort with a more varied choice of pistes – perfect once the kids have mastered the basics and the parents want to ski properly themselves. Right in Lomnica we also run an equipment rental shop that is an official Rossignol Test Centre.

A proven family scenario looks like this: the first two or three days playing it safe in Starý Smokovec, and once the kids find their rhythm, a move to Tatranská Lomnica. You will find the exact addresses of both locations, with a map, on our locations page.

Day plan: what a successful family ski day looks like

With children, a simple rule works best: effort in the morning, fun in the afternoon. Here is what a day that both three-year-olds and their parents can handle might look like:

  • 8:00 – 9:00 – breakfast and picking up the equipment. We are available daily from 8:00 to 21:00, so you can easily avoid the morning rush.
  • 9:00 – 10:30 – a private lesson with an instructor. The morning is ideal for learning: kids are rested and the slopes freshly groomed. The most popular lesson length is 90 minutes – enough for visible progress and just right for a child's attention span.
  • 10:30 – 12:00 – free skiing. The kids practise what they have learned while the parents take turns: one skis, the other cheers at the bottom of the slope, phone in hand.
  • 12:00 – 13:30 – lunch and a proper break somewhere warm. Don't rush it – a tired child won't ski much after lunch anyway.
  • Afternoon – a short free ski, a walk in the Tatras or a rest at the hotel. A second lesson on the same day is something we recommend rather for older children and adults.

It sounds simple, but it is exactly this rhythm that decides whether the kids fall asleep smiling and look forward to the slope in the morning.

A shared private lesson: one instructor for the whole family

The biggest difference compared to traditional ski schools: with us, not every family member has to sign up for a separate course. You can come to one private lesson together – siblings, a parent with a child, or even the whole family. The instructor divides the attention so that everyone progresses, and parents can be sure their kids learn the right habits from day one.

And how does it work out price-wise? In Tatranská Lomnica a 90-minute lesson costs €63 and each additional person only +€17. Two siblings can therefore share a 90-minute lesson for €80 – considerably less than two separate sessions would cost. Lessons of 60 minutes (€44) and 120 minutes (€77) are also available. In Starý Smokovec a 60-minute lesson costs €44 with each additional person at +€10; guests of Hotel Atrium pay a preferential €37. If you ski for several days, in Tatranská Lomnica you get a 5% discount for 3 days and 10% for 6 or more days. You will find the complete overview in our price list.

For the youngest skiers we use playful methods, teaching aids and rewards that turn learning into a game – read more in our article Ski courses for children.

Equipment for the whole family in one place

Travelling with skis, boots and helmets for four people is a logistical nightmare. It is far more practical to rent everything on site: our rental shop in Tatranská Lomnica is an official Rossignol Test Centre, and a complete set (skis, boots, poles) starts at just €24 per day. Multi-day rentals work out even better per day – for example, 3 days of a complete set cost €67. We also rent helmets and goggles; children, however, get a helmet free of charge with their lesson. You arrive in the morning, and a few minutes later you walk out with fitted equipment ready for the slope – and after the holiday there is nothing to carry home or service.

Practical tips for skiing with kids in the High Tatras

  • Book lessons in advance. The season runs roughly from December to March or April, and dates during the holidays and half-term breaks fill up fastest.
  • Buy ski passes online. You will save yourself the morning queue at the ticket office – passes for the Tatra resorts can be bought in advance via gopass.travel or on the resort websites.
  • Dress the kids in layers. Pack spare gloves and socks – wet gloves end a ski day more reliably than tiredness does.
  • Less is more. For children aged 3 to 6, 60–90 minutes on the slope is just right. Better short and joyful than long and tearful.
  • Plan hot-chocolate breaks. A warm drink and a small treat work wonders for a child's motivation.
  • If your kids are standing on skis for the first time, read our guide How to learn to ski – you will find out what to expect from the first lessons.
