Ski Season High Tatras – When to Go Skiing in the Tatras

When the Ski Season Starts and Ends

The ski season in the High Tatras typically begins in the first half of December and runs until the end of March or early April. The exact dates depend on snow conditions – some years skiing starts as early as late November, while other years you may need to wait until Christmas.

At Tatranská Lomnica, thanks to its higher elevation and modern snowmaking, the season is usually the longest. The Skalnaté Pleso zone (1,751 m) often has natural snow from November and skiing can sometimes continue until the end of April. Lower sections of the resort depend on snowmaking and natural snowfall.

Best Times to Go Skiing

Each month of the ski season has its own characteristics. Here is an overview:

December: Season start. Snow is usually fresh but not always sufficient on all trails. The Christmas period (Dec 23 – Jan 6) is peak time – lots of people, higher pass prices, longer queues. If you can, come before Christmas (December 1-20) – fewer crowds, lower prices, and often good snow.

January: Often the best month of the season. Snow is typically high quality and plentiful, temperatures consistently below freezing. Early January (after Epiphany) is an excellent period – the holiday crowds have departed and snow is fresh. Late January may be affected by school breaks.

February: Peak season. Best snow coverage but also the biggest crowds due to school holidays across multiple countries. Ski pass prices are at their highest. If you can avoid holiday weeks, February offers fantastic conditions.

March: Spring skiing. Longer days, warmer weather, but snow at altitude still holds. Ideal for those who love sunshine and a relaxed vibe. Prices drop and crowds thin out. At Skalnaté Pleso you can ski in a t-shirt!

Snow Conditions in the High Tatras

The High Tatras have an advantage over other Slovak mountain ranges due to their elevation. Tatranská Lomnica offers skiing from 888 m to 2,196 m, meaning snow at higher elevations is reliable throughout the season. Average snow depth at Skalnaté Pleso during the season is 100-200 cm.

Modern snowmaking systems additionally ensure quality snow coverage on lower trails. The resort has invested significantly in snowmaking, so even in weaker winters, skiing is possible on most trails.

Tips for Saving Money

  • Off-peak times – ski on weekdays outside school holidays. Passes are cheaper and queues shorter
  • Early or late purchase – watch for ski pass pre-sales, as pre-season offers include discounts
  • More days = better price – multi-day passes are more economical than single-day ones
  • Rent instead of buy – rent equipment at our Rossignol Test Centre
  • Stay in Starý Smokovec – accommodation tends to be cheaper than directly in Tatranská Lomnica and transport connections are excellent

Premiere Ski School – Open All Season Long

Our ski school is open daily from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM throughout the entire winter season, from December to March. We offer private lessons from €44 for 60 minutes with APUL-certified instructors at both our locations – in Tatranská Lomnica and at Jakubkova Meadow in Starý Smokovec.

We recommend booking your lesson in advance, especially during holiday periods. The earlier you get in touch, the better your chances of securing exactly the time and instructor that suits you. Get ready for an unforgettable ski season in the High Tatras!
