Safety first
Read this before you book
Ski touring does not happen on a piste. Most Tatra valleys and cols are avalanche terrain in winter, and the decisions there are yours. We hand over the gear; the rest is on you.
Renting gear is not knowing the terrain
We set the bindings and hand over skins trimmed to the ski. We cannot read the slope, the snow or the weather for you. If you are new to touring in the Tatras, do your first tours with somebody who knows the terrain or with a mountain guide; we are happy to point you to experienced ones.
We do not rent avalanche safety equipment
Transceiver, probe and shovel are not in our range and are not part of any set. Anyone going into avalanche terrain must own them and know how to use them. Carrying a transceiver in a pack has never saved anybody on its own.
Read the bulletin before every tour, not once a winter
Avalanche conditions in the Tatras change from day to day. The Slovak mountain rescue service publishes the bulletin at laviny.sk. Read the danger level together with the text, not just as a number.
Tell somebody where you are going
Your route, your expected return time and a charged phone. The Slovak mountain rescue emergency number is 18 300.
The Tatras are a national park
Travel off marked routes is regulated inside TANAP and parts of the park close seasonally in winter. Check the current closures before you leave home.
Consider an avalanche course
You cannot learn to use a transceiver on the day you need it. If you plan to ski off-piste regularly, an avalanche safety course is a better investment than another pair of skis.

What to pack for a tour
Our gear is only part of the kit. Bring the rest yourself.
- Your own avalanche kit: transceiver, probe, shovel, and the practice to use them
- A pack that fits a shovel, a probe and one spare layer
- Clothing in layers: thinner for the climb, jacket out of the pack for the descent
- Two pairs of gloves, one for the climb and a dry pair for the descent
- Headlamp, for early starts and for tours that run long
- Thermos with a hot drink and food for the whole day
- Map or GPS on your phone, downloaded offline, plus a power bank
- Sunglasses and sunscreen; spring snow reflects the sun from below as well
- One thin ski sock, not two thick ones
- A charged phone with 18 300, the mountain rescue number

What ski touring actually is
Ski touring means moving through winter mountains by climbing on skis with skins stuck to the base, then skiing back down through open terrain. The gear differs from downhill kit: the binding releases at the heel so you can walk, the skis are lighter, and the boots switch between walk and ski mode.
That is why downhill equipment cannot stand in for touring gear. If you are trying ski touring for the first time, renting is the sensible way to start: a full set costs hundreds of euros to buy, and €40 to rent for a day.
Ski Trab and Scott: what we rent
Touring skis and sets are Ski Trab, an Italian manufacturer that builds ski touring and race equipment exclusively. Touring boots are Scott. Those are two brands, not a whole catalogue.
We deliberately do not list specific lengths, widths and weights here: what is free changes through the season depending on what is out. Call us with your height, weight and boot size and we will tell you what we have for your dates and how it will fit.
Alongside touring gear we are an official Rossignol Test Center, so if you want current-season downhill skis you will find them in the main rental shop.
Reserving and collecting
Unlike downhill kit, touring sets need booking ahead: there are not many of them and they are usually out during the season. Call +421 911 561 561 with your dates, height, weight and shoe size and we will have a set ready.
Allow 15 to 20 minutes at pickup. We set the bindings, you put the boot on both feet, walk in walk mode and try locking it into ski mode. A boot that pinches cannot be swapped in the car park below the valley.

Where you can tour in the Tatras
The Tatras are compact and the vertical adds up fast. From Hrebienok along the marked route into the Velická valley to Sliezsky dom is about 400 metres of climbing in an hour and a half to two hours, the classic first tour. Malá Studená valley up to Téryho chata is around 700 metres of climbing. The Furkotská valley from Štrbské Pleso is gentle and a good place to start.
Those same valleys are avalanche terrain in winter, and Tatra National Park has its own rules and seasonal closures away from marked routes. A fuller route rundown, including harder days out, is in our ski touring guide to the High Tatras.

Do I need to reserve in advance?
Yes. We hold a limited number of touring sets and they are usually out during the season, so reservations go through +421 911 561 561, daily from 8:00 to 21:00.
Do you rent avalanche equipment?
No. We do not rent transceivers, probes or shovels, and they are not part of any set. Anyone going into avalanche terrain must have their own avalanche kit and know how to use it. The current avalanche bulletin is published by the Slovak mountain rescue service at laviny.sk; the emergency number is 18 300.
Are climbing skins part of the full set?
Yes. The €40 per day full set includes skis, skins, poles and boots. Skins are also in the skis with skins set at €35 and the skis with skins and poles set at €38. The skis-only set at €30 does not include skins; on their own they are €15 per day.
From what age do you rent touring gear?
Touring gear is issued by height, weight and boot size rather than by age. Call us with those three numbers and we will tell you whether we have a set that fits. A younger skier should only enter avalanche terrain with an adult who knows it. We do rent downhill sets to children, and the school teaches from age 3.
What if the boots do not fit?
Fitting is part of the pickup, so allow 15 to 20 minutes for it: put the boot on both feet, walk in walk mode and try locking it into ski mode. We keep going through sizes until one fits. If you only notice the problem up in the mountains, call +421 911 561 561.
Can I collect the gear the evening before?
We are open daily until 21:00, so collecting the evening before your tour works when the set is free that day. Mention it when you book; how the days are counted in that case we agree on the phone.

Can I rent downhill equipment too?
