Ski Touring High Tatras – A Beginner's Guide to Ski Mountaineering

What Is Ski Touring and Why Is It So Popular

Ski touring, also known as ski mountaineering or skimo, is a form of skiing where you do not take a lift to the summit but ascend on your own power – with skis on your feet and special climbing skins attached. After reaching your destination, you remove the skins and enjoy the descent through untouched powder snow, far from crowded groomed runs. It is a combination of hiking and skiing that gives you an entirely different mountain experience.

In recent years, ski touring has experienced a massive surge in popularity, and the High Tatras are perfectly suited for this activity. This compact mountain range with rapid elevation gain, beautiful valleys, and reliable snow from December to April offers dozens of routes for all levels – from easy ascents to challenging high-alpine tours.

Equipment for Ski Touring – What You Need

Ski touring equipment differs from standard alpine gear. Here is an overview of what you will need:

  • Touring skis – lighter and narrower than alpine skis, with bindings that allow a free heel during ascent
  • Touring bindings – special bindings that switch between climbing mode and descent mode
  • Climbing skins – textile strips that attach to the base of the skis to prevent sliding backwards during ascent
  • Touring boots – lighter than alpine boots, with a walk mode that unlocks the cuff for comfortable climbing
  • Avalanche kit – transceiver, shovel, and probe – mandatory equipment for safe off-piste travel
  • Backpack – a light pack for water, food, spare clothing, and your avalanche kit

If you do not yet own your own gear, you do not need to invest thousands of euros in purchasing it. At Premiere Ski School, we operate a touring equipment rental featuring the Ski Trab brand – one of the most respected manufacturers of touring skis in the world. Learn more about our rental in the article Ski Rental High Tatras.

Best Ski Touring Routes in the High Tatras

The High Tatras offer routes for all levels of ski tourers. Here is a selection of the most popular:

  • Hrebienok – Sliezsky Dom – a classic beginner route. Ascent from Hrebienok along the marked trail into Velická Valley. Elevation gain approximately 400 m, ascent time 1.5-2 hours.
  • Malá Studená Valley – a moderately challenging route with a beautiful descent. Ascent to Téryho Chata and descent through the valley. Elevation gain approximately 700 m.
  • Furkotská Valley – a popular route from Štrbské Pleso. A gentle valley suitable for beginners with a lovely descent.
  • Zadné Meďodoly – a more challenging route for experienced tourers with excellent north-facing descent terrain.

Important note: The High Tatras are a national park and off-trail movement is regulated. Always verify current conditions and permits on the TANAP website. Avalanche conditions can change rapidly – monitor avalanche bulletins from the Mountain Rescue Service.

Safety in Ski Touring

Ski touring is a beautiful but potentially dangerous activity. Safety must always come first:

  • Avalanche education – complete an avalanche safety course before your first backcountry outing
  • Avalanche kit – transceiver, shovel, and probe are mandatory. Know how to use them!
  • Experience – beginners should never go alone. Go with an instructor or experienced partner
  • Weather – monitor the forecast and avalanche bulletin. In poor conditions, stay on groomed trails
  • Communication – charged phone, let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return
