Tatranská Lomnica vs. Jasná – Which Resort Should You Choose?

Two Giants of Slovak Skiing

When skiing in Slovakia comes up in conversation, two names dominate above all others: Tatranská Lomnica and Jasná. Both resorts rank among the absolute best in Central Europe, and each has its loyal following. But which one is better? The answer depends on what exactly you are looking for. In this article, we will help you decide.

Tatranská Lomnica is located in the High Tatras beneath Lomnický Peak, while Jasná sits in the Low Tatras below Chopok. Although they are only about 60 km apart as the crow flies, the character of each resort is markedly different.

Trail and Size Comparison

Jasná is unquestionably larger. With approximately 50 km of trails on both sides of Chopok (north and south), it is the biggest ski resort in Slovakia. It offers enormous trail variety – from wide beginner slopes to steep black runs and freeride terrain.

Tatranská Lomnica is smaller with approximately 12 km of trails, but it offers something Jasná does not – skiing in the genuine high-mountain environment of the real High Tatras. The run from Skalnaté Pleso (1,751 m) is one of the most exhilarating ski experiences in Slovakia. Snow lasts longer here and quality is often superior thanks to the higher elevation.

Atmosphere and Experience

This is where the differences are most pronounced. Jasná is a modern, commercial resort with a vibrant après-ski scene, large parking areas, and an international atmosphere. Everything is available – from entertainment to fine dining. Jasná also hosts international events including World Cup races.

Tatranská Lomnica offers a calmer, more authentic atmosphere. The resort is set in a historic Tatra settlement with beautiful Art Nouveau architecture. Less bustling than Jasná, but all the more romantic for it. The views of the Tatra peaks are unforgettable. For families and those seeking a more tranquil experience, Tatranská Lomnica is the clear choice.

Prices and Accessibility

Price-wise, both resorts are similar. A full-day ski pass at either runs around €50-60 for an adult (2025/2026 season). Tatranská Lomnica tends to be slightly cheaper, but the difference is not dramatic.

In terms of accessibility, Tatranská Lomnica has an advantage for visitors coming from Poland and the Czech Republic. From Kraków it is under 2 hours by car, from Ostrava about 3 hours. Jasná is somewhat further from these directions. From Bratislava, however, Jasná is closer (about 2.5 hours) compared to Tatranská Lomnica (about 3.5 hours).

Which Resort Is Right for You

Choose Tatranská Lomnica if:

  • You are traveling with family and young children – combined with Jakubkova Meadow, it is ideal
  • You want a high-mountain experience with breathtaking views
  • You are coming from Poland or eastern Czech Republic – it is closer
  • You prefer a calmer atmosphere without mass tourism
  • You want to combine skiing with other Tatra activities (hiking, wellness)

  • You want maximum trail kilometers and variety
  • You are looking for vibrant après-ski and nightlife
  • You are an advanced skier seeking freeride opportunities
  • You are coming from Bratislava or western Slovakia
  • You are planning a multi-day intensive ski trip

Our Recommendation

At Premiere Ski School, we operate in Tatranská Lomnica and Starý Smokovec and know both resorts thoroughly. Our honest recommendation? If you have the opportunity, visit both. They are close enough that during a week-long stay you can spend a few days at each.

However, for a first introduction to skiing and for families with children, we unequivocally recommend Tatranská Lomnica and Jakubkova Meadow. Our APUL-certified instructors will provide you with private lessons starting from €44 for 60 minutes and help you discover the beauty of Tatra skiing.
