Ski Courses for Kids – When to Start and What to Expect

What Age Can a Child Start Skiing

One of the most common questions we receive from parents is: "How old does my child need to be to start skiing?" The answer is not straightforward because every child is different, but generally speaking, most children are ready for their first skiing attempts around 3 to 4 years old. At this age, they have sufficiently developed coordination, balance, and muscle strength to handle basic movements on skis.

More important than age itself, however, is the child's willingness. If the child is excited about snow, enjoys playing outside, and is eager to try new things, that is a good sign. Conversely, if the child expresses a reluctant attitude, forcing them will not bring anything good – in such a case, it is better to wait another season and try again.

Why Private Lessons for Kids

At Premiere Ski School, we offer exclusively private ski courses for children, and for good reason. Group lessons may be cheaper, but for young children they are often far from ideal. In a group, the instructor must divide attention among 8-12 children, which means each child receives only a fraction of individual attention.

During a private lesson, the instructor dedicates themselves exclusively to your child (or your children, if you have more than one). This brings several crucial advantages:

  • Pace adapted to the child – the instructor goes exactly as fast or slow as the child needs
  • Immediate feedback – every movement is corrected in real time
  • Safety – the instructor has the child under constant supervision
  • Flexibility – if the child is tired, a break comes immediately, not when it suits the whole group
  • Faster progress – children in private lessons learn in one hour what takes three hours in a group

How Children's Lessons Work at Premiere

Our instructors have extensive experience teaching children and use proven methodologies adapted to different age groups. For the youngest children (3-5 years), instruction is based primarily on play. The instructor uses various props – cones, hula hoop rings, figurines – and creates fun tasks, thanks to which children learn to ski without even realizing they are learning.

For older children (6-10 years), instruction is more structured but still fun. The instructor gradually adds technical elements – proper stance, parallel turns, braking, riding the lift. Children at this age learn very quickly, and after several lessons they can independently ski on easy to intermediate trails.

Teenagers (11+ years) learn practically the same way as adults, but with consideration for their physical abilities and interests. Many teenagers prefer snowboarding over skiing, and we of course offer that as well. Learn more about snowboard courses in our article Snowboard Courses Tatras.

What Your Child Needs for a Lesson

Proper equipment is the key to a successful and enjoyable lesson. Here is a checklist of what your child should have:

  • Ski helmet – an absolute must, no child is allowed on the slope without a helmet
  • Ski goggles – protect eyes from sun, wind, and snow
  • Ski jacket and pants – waterproof, windproof, warm
  • Gloves – mittens are best for smaller children, finger gloves for older ones
  • Thermal base layer – the bottom layer that wicks moisture away from the body
  • Ski boots and skis – if you do not have your own, you can rent them at our Rossignol Test Centre

If you are unsure about equipment, do not hesitate to contact us. At our ski rental, we have children's equipment in all sizes and our staff will help you choose the right fit.

Where Children's Lessons Take Place

For children and beginners, we recommend our location at Jakubkova Meadow in Starý Smokovec. This slope is perfect for young skiers – it is gentle, safe, and not too crowded. Children feel comfortable here and are not intimidated by large slopes and fast skiers.

More advanced children who already master the basics can also train at Tatranská Lomnica, where there is a wider selection of trails at various difficulty levels. The instructor always selects a trail appropriate to the child's abilities.

The price of a private children's lesson starts from €44 for 60 minutes. We recommend starting with shorter lessons (60 minutes) and gradually extending them as the child builds stamina and enthusiasm. For multi-day stays, we offer attractive packages. The school is open daily from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM, so you can find a time that suits you and your child best.

Investing in quality ski instruction during childhood pays back many times over. Children who learn to ski properly from the start love skiing for their entire lives.
