Private vs. Group Ski Lessons – What Is the Difference?

Two Approaches to Learning to Ski

When deciding on ski instruction, you essentially have two options: group courses and private lessons. Each has its place and its justification. In this article, we will help you understand the differences and decide what is best for you. And we will reveal why at Premiere Ski School we chose to offer exclusively private lessons.

Group Courses – Pros and Cons

Advantages of group courses:

  • Lower price – the main advantage. The cost is shared among multiple participants, making it cheaper per person
  • Social aspect – you meet people at a similar level and can motivate each other
  • Fun for kids – some children feel more comfortable in a group than alone

Disadvantages of group courses:

  • Less individual attention – the instructor is shared among 6-12 people
  • Group pace – you must go at the group's pace, not your own
  • Waiting time – much time is spent waiting while others take their turns
  • Mixed levels – even in a "beginner" group there are differences between participants
  • Fixed schedule – you must adapt to the course time and duration
  • Less effective – slower progress, more time needed to reach the same level

Private Lessons – Why They Are More Effective

Private ski lessons are the exact opposite of group courses in the best possible way. Here is an overview of their benefits:

  • 100% instructor attention – all the time is dedicated solely to you
  • Pace adapted to you – you go exactly as fast or slow as you need
  • Immediate feedback – every mistake is corrected instantly
  • Flexible schedule – you start when you want, for as long as you want
  • Trail selection – the instructor picks the trail exactly matching your level
  • Faster progress – you learn in one hour what takes three in a group
  • Privacy – no need to feel embarrassed in front of strangers
  • Family format – your whole family can learn together

Comparing Effectiveness and Cost

At first glance, private lessons appear more expensive. A group course typically costs €25-35 per person for 2-3 hours, while a private lesson at Premiere starts from €44 for 60 minutes. But let us look at it from an effectiveness standpoint:

In a group course (e.g., 10 people, 2 hours), you receive an average of 12 minutes of direct instructor attention. In a 60-minute private lesson, you receive 60 minutes of direct attention. That is 5 times more for less than double the price.

When you factor in faster progress (fewer lessons needed to reach the same level), private lessons ultimately work out comparably, or even more favorably, than group courses.

Why Premiere Offers Only Private Lessons

At Premiere Ski School, we have consciously chosen to offer exclusively private lessons. It is not about being more expensive – it is about providing the best possible quality of instruction. We believe every skier deserves the full attention of an instructor and a program tailored precisely to their needs.

Our instructors are APUL-certified professionals who speak Slovak, Czech, Polish, and English. The school is open daily from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM at both locations – at Tatranská Lomnica and at Jakubkova Meadow in Starý Smokovec.
