How to Learn to Ski – A Complete Beginner's Guide

First Step: The Decision and Preparation

You have decided that you want to learn to ski? Congratulations – it is one of the best decisions you can make! Skiing is a fantastic sport that opens doors to unforgettable mountain experiences. And the best part – it is never too late to start. At Premiere Ski School in the High Tatras, we have taught thousands of people to ski, ranging in age from 3 to over 70 years old.

The first step is mental preparation. Skiing may look challenging or intimidating at first glance, but with a good instructor and the right approach, truly anyone can learn it. The key is patience and willingness to accept that the first hours on the slope will not be perfect – and that is perfectly fine.

Choosing the Right Equipment

As a beginner, you do not need to buy your own equipment. In fact, we recommend renting skis and boots. At our Rossignol Test Centre, we have the latest Rossignol ski models available, ideal for both beginners and advanced skiers. Our staff will help you select the right ski length and boot size based on your height, weight, and skill level.

What you will need to bring:

  • Ski jacket and pants – should be waterproof and warm
  • Thermal base layer – the foundation layer of clothing
  • Ski socks – special socks that are thin, warm, and reach above the calf
  • Gloves – warm, preferably waterproof
  • Helmet – mandatory gear for every skier
  • Ski goggles – protect against sun and wind

Why Start with an Instructor

Many people think they can learn to ski on their own or with help from a friend. This is one of the biggest myths in skiing. Self-teaching leads to bad habits that are very difficult to correct later. Moreover, it is far more dangerous – without proper braking technique and speed control, there is a risk of injury to both yourself and others on the slope.

A professional instructor will show you the correct technique from the very first minute, teach you how to brake safely, fall and get up, and gradually guide you from the absolute basics to independent skiing. At Premiere Ski School, all instructors are APUL certified and have years of experience teaching beginners.

A private lesson is unquestionably the best choice for a beginner. The instructor focuses solely on you, adapts the pace to your needs, and you do not have to feel embarrassed in front of others. Learn more about the benefits of private lessons in our article Private vs. Group Lessons.

What You Will Learn During Your First Lesson

The first lesson is always an exciting experience. Here is an overview of what awaits you:

  • Putting on boots and skis – yes, this is also a skill that needs to be learned
  • Basic stance – correct body position, weight distribution, hand placement
  • Walking in skis – moving on flat terrain, turning in place
  • Snowplow – the fundamental braking technique where ski tips point together and tails spread apart
  • First descents – short runs on a gentle slope with snowplow braking
  • First turns – changing direction using the snowplow technique

Most beginners learn to stop safely and make basic turns on a gentle slope during their first 60-minute lesson. After 3-4 lessons, it is common to be able to ski independently on easy blue runs.

Where to Learn to Ski in the High Tatras

The High Tatras are an ideal location for beginners. Our site at Jakubkova Meadow in Starý Smokovec is perfect for first skiing steps – a gentle slope, safe environment, and minimal distractions. Here you will learn the basics in a calm, stress-free atmosphere.

Once you master the basics, we will move to Tatranská Lomnica, where a wider network of trails awaits. The beginner blue runs in the lower part of the resort are perfect for further skill development. And when you become an advanced skier, more challenging red and black runs will be waiting for you.

The price of a private beginner lesson starts from €44 for 60 minutes. We recommend starting with a package of 3-5 lessons, which allows you to systematically progress and reach a level where you truly enjoy skiing. The school is open daily from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

Do not be afraid to take the first step. Thousands of people before you have done it, and you can too. The High Tatras are waiting – and we at Premiere Ski School will help you discover their beauty on skis!
