Tatranská Lomnica – Complete Guide to Skiing Beneath Lomnický Peak

Why Tatranská Lomnica Is the Most Popular Resort in the High Tatras

Tatranská Lomnica is the flagship ski resort of the High Tatras and rightfully ranks among the best resorts in Slovakia. It sits beneath the iconic Lomnický štít peak (2,634 m above sea level), which provides not only breathtaking panoramic views but also excellent snow conditions thanks to the high altitude. The resort offers trails for all levels of skiers – from gentle beginner slopes to steep black-diamond runs.

The ski season at Tatranská Lomnica typically runs from December to April, with the best conditions usually occurring from January to March. Thanks to modern snowmaking equipment, the resort is able to ensure quality snow even when natural conditions are unfavorable. In recent years, the resort has invested millions of euros in modernizing its lifts and snowmaking systems.

Overview of Trails and Lifts

Tatranská Lomnica offers several ski zones connected by a modern lift system:

  • Skalnaté Pleso Zone (1,751 m) – the highest ski area, accessible by gondola. Here you will find red and black runs with excellent snow and stunning views. The Lomnické Sedlo trail is one of the longest in the region.
  • Štart Zone – the middle section of the resort with red and blue trails, ideal for advanced beginners and intermediate skiers.
  • Buková Zone – the lower section with predominantly blue trails, perfect for families and beginners. This is also where the children's area is located.

In total, the resort offers approximately 12 km of groomed trails. Lift capacity is sufficient to ensure you spend most of your time skiing rather than waiting in line – though during peak days (weekends, holidays) some queuing is unavoidable.

Premiere Ski School at Tatranská Lomnica

Our Premiere Ski School has one of its two locations directly at Tatranská Lomnica. Our APUL-certified instructors know every trail, every shortcut, and every hidden corner of the resort. They know exactly where the best conditions are on any given day and where it is worth going.

We offer exclusively private lessons starting from €44 for 60 minutes, meaning your instructor dedicates all their attention to you alone. For beginners, we typically start on the gentle slopes in the Buková zone and gradually progress to more challenging trails as your skills improve. Advanced skiers can head up to Skalnaté Pleso with their instructor and work on technique on red and black runs.

In addition to ski instruction, we operate a Rossignol Test Center at Tatranská Lomnica – a ski rental where you can try out the latest ski models from the world-renowned Rossignol brand. Learn more about our rental in the article Ski Rental High Tatras.

Practical Tips for Skiing at Tatranská Lomnica

  • Arrive early in the morning – parking spots fill up quickly, especially on weekends. We recommend arriving by 8:30 AM.
  • Ski passes – purchase your pass online in advance to avoid queuing at ticket offices.
  • Dining – there are several restaurants and snack bars in the resort, but prices tend to be higher. Alternatively, bring your own lunch.
  • Weather – at Skalnaté Pleso it can be 10-15°C colder than at the base. Dress in layers.

Comparison with Other Resorts

Tatranská Lomnica is unquestionably the largest and most modern resort in the High Tatras. Compared to Jasná, which offers more total trail kilometers, Tatranská Lomnica provides a unique high-mountain experience with shorter lift queues. Learn more about how these two resorts compare in our article Tatranská Lomnica vs. Jasná.

For families with young children and complete beginners, we recommend starting at our second location – Jakubkova Meadow in Starý Smokovec, where the environment is calmer and the slope gentler. Our school is open daily from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM and our instructors will gladly help you choose the most suitable location for your skiing.
